Dopo l’uscita di Planet Shhh! e Home, gli Human Pyramids pubblicano il 25 dicembre Power Pose, il loro nuovo album in studio. Abbiamo colto l’occasione per intervistarli.

Power Pose is about to be published. Are you guys excited about your third release?
Really Excited! I had a lot of fun with this album. I experimented with lots of new sounds and textures. The cheeky sound of the Clarinet. The raunchy sounds of the Saxophone and Trombone. I played a Harpsichord for the first time. It is also the first time Human Pyramids have been pressed on vinyl which I am buzzing about!
Can you tell us why did you choose to post it on Christmas day?
Originally Power Pose was meant to be a Christmas album. I wrote most of it last Christmas and into January when Glasgow was covered in a blanket of ice and snow. But as time moved on it got a wee bit less Christmassy but the release date stayed the same.
The album was recorded between Scotland, London and Berlin. Nowadays, thanks to technology, it is possible to work on the same project even without being together. I imagine that it can be hard to find time to play together to prepare an album or even a live show, right? How did you manage to overcome this problem?
Without technology, this band wouldn’t exist. The whole thing started as a solo project, recording friends (and friends of friends) playing in their living rooms, kitchens and bedrooms. Although we are more of a traditional “band” now, the albums are recorded the same way. It is not until we play a show that everyone gets together and meets for the first time. We have only played 10 shows in the past 6 years and I would estimate 300 different people (including choirs) have been on stage with us. It is an absolute logistical nightmare, but we always get there in the end!
Neo-classical arrangement, jubilant choir-led chamber music and post-punk. Before the music itself, how difficult it was to gather 16 players with such a different background and experiences?
Through friends and especially friends of friends (special mentions to Simon Dobson and Amelia Conway-Jones for fixing last minute Brass and String players). You just need to cross your fingers and hope for the best!
As a band, what are your main influences?
Lots of stuff! But my favourite albums released this year are: Morbid Stuff by Pup, Love Keeps Kicking by Martha, Be Content by Indoor Pets and Birthday by Pom Poko.
Tell us the pros and cons of having a 16 piece band.
Pros – It is a massive party!
Cons – The set up / morning after.
Some of the songs of the first two albums were featured in a lot of TV shows. What do you think about that? In the last years, TV series apparently overcame Movies. Are you happy to hear your music as soundtrack and are you happy of the fact that thanks to this you were potentially able to reach even a wider audience?
It is an honour to be featured on so many great shows over the past few years. Playing live is (almost) impossible for us, so appearing on the TV is a good second best. And you don’t even need to leave your living room!
Planet Shhh! and Home were a huge success for critics and media in general. What do you expect from Power Pose?

Power Pose è stato pubblicato. Quanto siete felici e soddisfatti di questo nuovo lavoro discografico?
Davvero entusiasti! Ci siamo divertiti un mondo con questo album. Abbiamo sperimentato tanto con nuovi suoni e nuove trame sonore. Tra clarinetto, sassofono e trombone, abbiamo suonato un clavicembalo per la prima volta. Tra l’altro, è stata la prima volta che abbiamo anche inciso su vinile, davvero fantastico!
Come mai avete scelto di pubblicare questo album il giorno di Natale?
All’inizio Power Pose doveva essere un album di Natale. É stato scritto tra Natale e gennaio, quando Glasgow era ricoperta da ghiaccio e neve. Durante le registrazioni, questo lavoro ha perso il suo spirito “natalizio”, ma abbiamo deciso di mantenere la stessa data d’uscita.
L’album è stato registrato tra Scozia, Londra e Berlino. Al giorno d’oggi, grazie alla tecnologia, è possibile lavorare allo stesso progetto anche senza essere fisicamente insieme. Credo che sia abbastanza difficile suonare insieme e preparare un album o uno show se si è in una band così grande, giusto? Come avete risolto questo problema?
Senza tecnologia, questa band non esisterebbe. Tutto questo è nato come un progetto solista, con amici e amici di amici che suonavano nei loro salotti, cucine e camere da letto. Nonostante il fatto che ora siamo una band più “tradizionale”, gli album continuano ad essere registrati allo stesso modo. Praticamente ci incontriamo solo per i live. Abbiamo suonato solo in 10 show negli ultimi 6 anni e potrei fare una stima e dirti che hanno suonato più o meno 300 persone (inclusi coristi) sul palco insieme a noi. É un incubo a livello logistico, ma alla fine riusciamo sempre a far funzionare tutto.
Arrangiamenti neoclassici, cori giubilanti e post-punk. A prescindere dalla musica, quanto è stato difficile riunire 16 musicisti con un background così differente e distante?
Amici e amici di amici (un ringraziamento speciale va a Simon Dobson e Amelia Conway-Jones per aver risolto il problema con gli ottoni e gli strumenti a corde). Tutto ciò che devi fare è incrociare le dita e sperare per il meglio!
Quali sono le vostre fonti di ispirazione come band?
Davvero tante! Ad esempio quest’anno ci son piaciuti molto Morbid Stuff di Pup, Love Keeps Kicking di Martha, Be Content degli Indoor Pets e Birthday di Pom Poko.
Diteci i pro e i contro di avere una band con 16 musicisti.
Pro: ogni volta è una festa pazzesca!
Contro: organizzazione del palco, e le mattine dopo i concerti.
Alcuni dei brani dei vostri primi due album sono stati colonne sonore di molte serie TV. Cosa ne pensate? Negli ultimi anni, le serie TV hanno quasi superato i film in termini di importanza. Siete felici di ascoltare i vostri brani come colonne sonore di questo tipo di programmi e siete felici del fatto che grazie a questa cosa, potenzialmente, avete avuto la possibilità di raggiungere un pubblico così ampio?
É un onore essere stati scelti come colonne sonore di così tanti show negli ultimi anni. Fare un concerto è (quasi) impossibile per noi, quindi apparire in TV è più o meno la seconda migliore soluzione per noi. E non devi neanche lasciare la tua sala da pranzo!
Planet Shhh! e Home sono stati un grande successo di critica e pubblico. Cosa vi aspettate da Power Pose?
